Social Democratic Party leader Gintautas Paluckas Eltai stated that the CEC needs a new president, because there are many reasonable doubts about L. Matjošaitytė’s administrative capacity.
“During his tenure, the CEC made many ambiguous and strange decisions. Some of those decisions even contradict each other. I mean how politicians should behave in one case or another. Let us remember how the CEC interpreted the activities of the Naisiai Theater during the tours of Lithuania, where theater events were encouraged to support the patron of this Karbauskis theater. It was decided that this was not a violation. Or other possible bribery of voters. For example, if a politician donates oranges for the holidays, it is a rape, and when the Seimas is already serving cookies, no, ”G. Paluck told Eltai.
According to him, the practice carried out by the CEC during the leadership of L. Matjošaitytė raised many reasonable doubts about political objectivity.
“After all, in many cases, the CEC president simply bowed to the will of the governors. I don’t see an opportunity for him to continue working and I highly doubt that the Seimas will extend his term,” said G. Paluckas.
At that time, Gabrielius Landsbergis, chairman of the Lithuanian Christian National-Democratic Union (TS-LKD) party, also acknowledged that the CEC had raised a series of discussions on the coherence of the decisions.
“It is an exceptionally important and responsible position, in which any mistake or even misunderstanding can affect the democratic processes of the State and damage confidence in them. In the run-up to the previous elections, there were several situations, especially in the face of a pandemic. Therefore, we will evaluate the work of the CCA term: ELTA responsibly, but also critically, ”TS-LKD leader TS-LKD told Elta.
At the time, the president of the Seimas Viktorija Čmilytė Nielsen affirms that the scenario of Zenonas Vaigauskas, when he was president of the CEC for more than 20 years, should not be repeated.
“The number of mandates does not in itself guarantee the quality of the work, it depends solely on the competence of the occupants. It must be admitted that the last legislature of the CEC has generated many discussions about the consistency of the decisions made, the ability to look at the electoral processes in a modern way, but at the same time reliable. Although we have already seen during the last elections to the Seimas that it is possible to avoid too long the counting of votes or serious errors, I believe that the Seimas will demand a different approach to face the challenges of the next elections, ”he said.
R. Karbauskis: I do not understand why L. Matjošaityte is criticized, because the Conservatives won the elections
Unlike other party presidents, LVŽS leader Ramūnas Karbauskis claims that L. Matjošaitytė coped with his duties better than expected. According to him, all the elections organized by the CEC went smoothly and there was no criticism against the president of the CEC.
„L. Matjošaitytė managed better than anyone expected. I think neither the right nor the left should mean much to her, because the right won the elections with L. Matjošaitytė. And we don’t think she’s done anything to lose either. I think this is a man who has gained some experience because he has led in difficult circumstances. Remember how the opposition treated us, closed the CEC with all kinds of complaints, etc. They were treated without interruption. After that, a CEC member from the conservative side in Druskininkai district was very strange, which made his job for the CEC very difficult. Now, if its mandate is extended, the CEC could start working on qualitative changes, ”R. Karbauskis told Eltai.
“There were many challenges during the mandate, both in the elections of the president, the European Parliament and the Seimas. But the CEC overcame all of this and I did not hear any complaints from my colleagues about the CEC’s activities. I think the president of the CEC should keep working, ”he said.
ELTA recalls that L. Matjošaitytė became president of the CEC in 2017. in June. Before that, the president of the CEC was Zenonas Vaigauskas, who led the commission for more than 20 years, starting in 1994.
The Central Electoral Commission will be formed by the Seimas no less than 140 and no more than 200 days after the ordinary or early elections to the Seimas. The Seimas appoints the president of the CEC by secret ballot at the proposal of the President of the Seimas.
The Central Election Commission consists of: two persons with higher university legal education appointed by the chairman of the commission, the Minister of Justice, two persons with higher university legal education appointed by the Lithuanian Bar Association, two persons with higher education appointed by the President, parties that receive seats in the multi-member constituency; nominees with higher university education and experience in electoral and referendum commissions.
