The motorcyclist competed in the “solo” class alongside Arūnas Gelažninkas.
The 52-year-old Frenchman fell to the track in another spotted speed stretch on January 10. The motorcyclist fell and was found unconscious.
He received help and a helicopter took him to the hospital. The man had suffered a severe head injury, for which doctors placed him in an artificial coma and operated on him.
It is reported that after a slight improvement in the condition, it was decided to fly the corridor to France, but the athlete’s life was extinguished during the trip.
For Cherpin, this was the fourth Dakar of his career. He first attended in 2009, when Dakar visited South America for the first time.
The athlete participated in the “solo” class, which he returned to in 2012. Cherpin returned to the Dakar for the third time in 2015, but then faced an engine failure and did not finish the race.
Six years later, Cherpin returned to Dakar and also participated in an “individual” class. As the rider himself said, his return to Dakar was driven by his curiosity to discover a new continent.
After the sixth stage, Cherpin was ranked 77 in the overall motorcycle ranking, and 22 out of the 23 remaining players in the “individual” ranking.
The entrepreneur and sailing enthusiast had no ambitions to win the Dakar, he simply wanted to survive the adventure without worrying about the podium: “I am an amateur, I don’t want to win, but I want to see new landscapes that I would never have had the chance to see. Everything is very exciting: riding a bike, living your passion, getting to know yourself better ”.
We remember that two motorcyclists died during the Dakar last year: Paulo Goncalves from Portugal and Edwin Straver from the Netherlands.
