Representatives of opposition groups say they support the resolution, but at the same time believe that there should be no basis for raising the question of granting V. Landsberg head of state status.
After hearing various interpretations of the possible consequences of a sentence of the resolution in the public sphere, the Seimas opposition declares that we understand the resolution as intended to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Defenders of Freedom Day, which should not be a basis for reinterpreting existing legislation. The opposition adheres to the interpretation of the Constitutional Court (CC), which affirms that the Constitution did not foresee the possibility of treating a person who is not the president of Lithuania and did not elect the nation as head of state, “read in the communiqué distributed by the “workers”.
“The Constitution does not provide exceptions in this regard. When the debate on this issue is heard again in the public sphere, we want to make it clear that we do not support constant speculation on this issue and we urge all political forces to respect the decision of the CC”, says Algirdas Sysas, the eldest of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party faction.
He was also supported by Aušrinė Norkienė, the eldest of the “peasant” faction.
“The Constitutional Court ruled very clearly and unequivocally on June 19, 2002. It declared in the resolution that” the Constitution does not allow the legislator to establish legal regulations that deny the individual legal status of the President of the Republic different from the status legal status of all other state officials and create legal preconditions to equate another person with the President of the Republic “, quoted by A. Norkienė.
However, the opposition says it supports the Seimas draft resolution “On the thirtieth anniversary of Defenders of Freedom Day”, signed by members of various factions, but does not want this document to become a reason for speculation.
“We remember the importance of that moment, on January 13, we respect the contribution of all people, both politicians and representatives of other professions, nations or points of view, thanks to which we are free today and we create an Independent Lithuania. Without unity, without all those who did not flee and boldly opposed the tanks, our country would continue to be hit by the chains from the east. Saying just thank you is not saying anything, because there are no words that can describe all the victims and efforts to liberate Lithuania, therefore we support the resolution and express our support, “says Vigilijus Jukna, the largest of the Labor Party faction.
2021 January 13 The 30th anniversary of the defense of Freedom will be commemorated. The commemoration of this anniversary of the pandemic will take place for the first time in cyberspace.
