Ramūnas Baltakartis and Arminas Cicėnas from Vilnius, Evaldas Čižinauskas and Laimis Gulbinauskas from Kaunas, Virginijus Gečas from Klaipėda and Vladimiras Okunevas from Klaipėda district receive the commemorative medal by decree of President Gitanas Nausėda.
Raimondas Bosas and Evaldas Kucinas from Jurbarkas District Municipality, Vilius Danys, Laimis Jasinevičius and Vygantas Pauliukas from Rokiškis District Municipality, Artūras Petrauskas from Toronto, Canada will also receive the awards.
According to the representative of President Antanas Bubnelis informed BNS, the awards will be presented on January 13.
Under the law, the January 13 Commemorative Medal is awarded in honor of Lithuanian and foreign citizens who distinguished themselves by defending the freedom and independence of Lithuania between January and September 1991.
In January 1991, the Soviets attempted to overthrow the legitimate government of Lithuania, which declared the country’s independence from the USSR on March 11, 1990 by military force. Fourteen people died and hundreds were injured in the January events.
