Sriwijaya Air’s Boeing 737-500 crashed on Saturday afternoon, about four minutes after taking off from Jakarta’s Soekarn-Hatta International Airport to fly to Pontianak on the island of Borneo.
A warship captured a plane’s signal and divers pulled the wreckage from a depth of about 23m, the Transport Ministry said on Sunday, citing Indonesian army commander Hadi Tjahjanto.
The message does not indicate whether it was a signal from a sunken aircraft recorder.
President Yoko Widodo expressed “great condolences” and asked citizens to “pray together to find the victims.”
However, a feverish search involving helicopters and warships gave no hope of finding people alive.
The search and rescue agency said it has so far removed the remains of people that could fit in five special bags, as well as the remains.
According to officials and correspondents of the AFP news agency, among the seized items are the clothing of a pink child, a damaged tire and wheel, life jackets and the remains of an airplane.
Among the passengers on the plane were Beben Sofian, 59, and her husband, Dan Razanah, 58. “They took a selfie and sent it to their children before takeoff,” Hendra, the couple’s nephew, told AFP.
All 62 people on board were Indonesian, including 10 children, authorities said.
