On Friday, the State Medicines Control Agency announced that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) had recommended that the information on Comirnaty be updated to clarify that each vial contains 6 doses of the vaccine.
Small inactive needles or syringes should be used to withdraw six doses from a vial. The inactive volume of the combination needle and small inactive syringe should not exceed 35 microliters. If standard syringes and needles are used, the vaccine may not be enough to draw the sixth dose from the vial.
If the amount of vaccine remaining in the vial after withdrawing the fifth dose cannot guarantee the full dose (0.3 ml), the healthcare professional should discard the vial and its contents. The vaccine should not be drawn from multiple vials to reach the full dose, and any unused vaccine should be discarded 6 hours after dilution. For more information on how to use Comirnaty, see the updated package insert.
The Comirnaty vaccine was developed by the pharmaceutical companies BioNTech and Pfizer. The vaccine is intended to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in people over the age of 16. The vaccination registry was approved on December 21, 2020.
Although the COVID-19 vaccine package contains 5 doses, doctors note that a frequent vial of vaccine is sufficient for most patients.
Šarūnas Mačinskas, Head of the Kaunas Clinics Outpatient Services Coordination Service, told a remote press conference on Thursday that decisions on the so-called “sixth dose” are very welcome.
“Regarding the ‘sixth dose’, we are anxious to make decisions about how to handle the ‘sixth dose’, because the vaccine has a very short shelf life after reconstitution and use – it should be used within 5 hours. This it means that it is no longer possible to use them in the future. Therefore, at the end of the period, they are destroyed according to the established procedure “, – Š. Mačinskas was quoted by the ELTA news agency.
The head of the Outpatient Services Coordination Service of the Kaunas Clinics added: “It is indicated that the institution organizing the vaccination is responsible for the proper disposal of residual products, that is, ampoules and remaining liquids, in accordance with the requirements “.
To date, coronavirus vaccine residues have been destroyed.
“All established procedures are followed, so there is no possibility that they (vaccine residues – ELTA) will get anywhere outside”, Š. Machinsk.
