This Maltese-flagged ship had already arrived from the Russian port of Ust-Luga to Klaipeda with a shipment of fertilizers on December 24 last year. Both then and now, Port Border Guard officers from the Pagėgiai border team of the SBGS already had preliminary information that there may be illegal immigrants in it, reports SBGS.

After unloading the cargo of fertilizers from the ship in late December, it sailed empty into international waters and waited there until it could return to the Klaipeda port to load another cargo. Last night, it arrived at the port again from the outer Baltic Sea raid, where a cargo of grain will now be loaded.

The ship in Klaipeda will be constantly monitored by the officers of the Klaipėda Special Purpose Division Pagėgiai team for approximately 3 days. Then it is scheduled to sail to Algeria.

The circumstances were similar on December 24 and this time around the arrival of the ship and the inspections carried out at the Border Guard checkpoint. The captain and all 18 crew members are Filipino citizens, all whose documents are in order.

There are two illegal immigrants on board who presented themselves as Algerian citizens. They are locked in separate rooms on the ship with a key. According to the captain, the migrants who had entered the boat illegally were detected when the ship set sail for Ust-Luga from the port of Oran in Algeria.

The captain presented letters of guarantee to the border guards both once and now. They are committed to ensuring that illegal immigrants do not leave the ship during the ship’s stay in Klaipeda port. The captain is also responsible for ensuring the protection of both people on board.
