Pasvalys Hospital suffered the painful loss of a doctor and pediatrician V. Virbickas, 66, died of COVID-19. The deceased headed the Department of Childhood Diseases at Pasvalys Hospital.
According to Rolandas Rastauskas, director of Hospital Pasvalys, when the epidemiological situation began, V. Virbickas agreed to lead another medical team that was already supervising patients with COVID-19.
“The activities of the Department of Pediatrics were suspended on November 11. At his request, he did not hesitate, with benevolence, faithful to the oath of Hippocrates, and immediately agreed to direct that department,” he said.
Probably infected by his wife
It is not entirely clear how the deceased became infected with the coronavirus. Although the doctor headed the COVID-19 department, according to R. Rastauskas, the deceased fell ill while not working.
On the ninth day of December, COVID-19 fell ill with V. Virbickas’s wife, which left the pediatrician isolated. After 10 days, the pediatrician himself fell ill with the same disease.
“He was diagnosed with the disease on the 17th and he was treated in the hospital as of December 20. Already 21 d. he underwent resuscitation, the disease progressed a lot ”, added the head of the hospital.
R. Rastauskas said that a total of 80 doctors have been diagnosed with coronavirus in the hospital or are still ill.
“Today, about 35 are sick. Overall, a third of them are already sick, so many doctors are already returning to work,” he said.
However, the provision of other services in the hospital remains minimal, and only minor routine surgeries are performed without the need for a resuscitation room.
