For some of the Lithuanians, the Dakar could have ended prematurely – it showed what happened on the track

Antanas Juknevičius and Darius Vaičiulis did not hide their joy after the second speed section: they were expecting these types of tracks last year, so this year the joy is twofold. First of all, it’s amusing for the decent variety of dunes, as the crew, named after the sandy shores of the Dakar, are coveted. However, the day was not at all easy: the team, which started from position 72, had to overtake many trucks, buggies, crews of slower cars.

Turns out, one of those curves could have been fatal. However, the crew only found out by handing over their rally car to the mechanics.

“It just came to our attention then. And one of the risks – goes, – said A. Juknevičius, showing not only the bent, but also broken front lower fork of the car.” I’m not saying that we have finished the Dakar, but we could have buried any result. “

It turns out that the crew bent the fork bending the buggy slower and crashed into the stone when necessary. The fork bent and cracked, and if it had been broken, according to the interlocutor, the result would have had many consequences.

“It would be a hollow axle, it would probably be bent and pulled, it would be a complete wheel gone for a long time. It wouldn’t be more than an hour or two ”, said the interlocutor.

A. Juknevičius saw the consequences of dangerous corners only when he returned to mechanics. The find was the height of the Patience Cup.

“I immediately went to the judges, not to take a shower or take off my jumpsuit. I said that we have the opportunity to exercise the right of ‘joker’ three times and we want to exercise it for the first time,” said the pilot, who still does not know if His request to reposition the crew and move up positions will be fulfilled. – Benediktas Vanagas exercised that right yesterday, I think it would have been more prudent for us to exercise it yesterday as well.

According to the driver, driving as he is now is too dangerous, because in 15-20 minutes the crew overtakes 3-4 cars on the track, which is a danger for both those who pass and those who pass.

Could have run out of engine

According to A. Juknevičius, it was after the impact on the stones that the fuel pumps stopped working.

“And we sit still for 6-7 minutes until we figure out what could have happened. The reason for this is not yet clear, but both pumps are being replaced with new ones. And the data from our computer has been taken to the South Racing engineers, who will see what errors were detected by the unit and why both pumps stopped working ”, said the pilot.

The biggest concern is that both pumps failed at the same time. After all, it should normally happen that when one pump stops working, the second should work, but this one didn’t work either. Neither the team’s mechanics nor A. Juknevičius suspect why this happened.

“We need to have a pressure of at least five bars for the engine to work normally. If the pressure is lower, the fuel mixture is too lean and we can simply to forge motor. It’s a fork, the smallest thing we could do without a motor today. But we were lucky, because I turned on both pumps, they rose to 4 bar of pressure and with that pressure we finished ”, said the runner.

The above problems also came out

Last year, the Kreda crew had another problem: when they went out into the dunes, the engine started to warm up.

“It just came to our attention then. But not at critical moments, – admitted A. Juknevičius, considering that perhaps the heating was not caused by the same problem as last year.” We think the radiator may be overloaded.

According to A. Juknevičius, the engine started to warm up not when the most difficult moments have to be driven through the dunes in low gears, but where there are long lines and high speed.

“You just drive like this, we reach our top speed – 170 km / h, and immediately the engine starts to warm up, we have to stop, let go,” said the athlete.
