Starting in January, the unemployment benefit will increase, the insured will receive higher sickness benefits and the “ceiling” of social security contributions will decrease. Sodra reminds us of the changes that will affect employees in 2021.
Unemployment benefits will increase next year due to the increase in the monthly minimum wage (MMA). The unemployment benefit consists of two parts: variable and fixed, the amount of which depends on the MMA. The constant share of unemployment benefit is 23.27 percent. the MMA in effect for the month for which the benefit is paid. In 2021, the MMA will reach € 642, so the fixed rate of unemployment benefit will be € 149.39 (€ 141.25 in 2020).
The variable part of the unemployment benefit depends on the insured income that the person has. The calculation of the variable part of the unemployment benefit takes into account the insured income of the beneficiary during the 30 months that elapsed before the end of the calendar month prior to the date of registration of the unemployed person in the Employment Service.
For example, if a person registers with the Employment Service in January 2021, the fixed part of their unemployment benefit will be € 149.39, and the variable part will be calculated on the basis of the average insured income maintained from the beginning of June 2018 to the end of November 2020.
The maximum unemployment benefit cannot exceed 58.18%. Vytautas Magnus University, valid for the calendar quarter prior to the day of enrollment in the Employment Service. 2021 The maximum unemployment benefit for people registered with the Employment Service in the first quarter will be 840 euros.
The amount of benefits is related to the average salary.
As of January 1. The maximum amounts of sickness, paternity and childcare benefits and the minimum amount of sickness benefits will also change. As before, benefits will depend on the assured income of the population, but the “floor” and “ceiling” of some benefits will change.
The maximum amount of social security benefits and the minimum amount in case of sickness benefits change because it depends on the national average monthly salary (VMU), including data on the wages of individual companies, which is recalculated on a quarterly basis. The principle for calculating profits does not change.
For example, the monthly sickness benefit cannot be less than 11.64 percent of the country’s VMU, which was valid in the quarter prior to the date of determination of temporary incapacity for work. Therefore, VMU, which was valid in the third quarter of the final year, 1,443.80 EUR will be used to calculate the amount of profit in the first quarter of 2021.
Starting in January, the minimum monthly sickness benefit will be 168.06 euros per day, 8 euros. Residents receive the minimum benefits if the benefit amount calculated based on their insured income is less than the minimum threshold.
The maximum compensatory earnings for the calculation of sickness benefits cannot exceed the amount of 2 VMU valid in the quarter prior to the date of incapacity for work. For the next three months, the maximum monthly sickness benefit will be € 1,792.04 (€ 85.34 per day) and € 1,904.08 (€ 90.67 per day) for patient care. Residents whose median salary was greater than 2 at VMU can expect those maximum benefits.
Another child care benefit is in February
In December, residents raising children under the age of two received two child care benefits: for November and for December. Sodra pays the December benefit until the end of the year and not, as usual, next month.
It is important to note that as a result, child care benefits will not be paid in January and subsequent payments will be made in the usual way. This means that in 2021, families will receive their next child care benefit in February.
The “ceiling” and the “floor” of contributions will change
Starting next year, the maximum amount on which social security contributions are calculated, that is, the “ceiling” of contributions, decreases. In 2021, this amount will reach 81,162 euros, that is, 60 VMU. In comparison, in 2020, the contribution ceiling amounted to 84 VMU – 104,277 euros.
The maximum amount from which social security contributions are calculated will be calculated jointly if a person works for several employers; In 2020, this amount was calculated for each employer separately. If there is an overpayment of SSD contributions due to the contribution limit being reached, it will need to be reimbursed directly to the employee. So far, all the overpayments have been reimbursed to the policyholder, that is, the employer, and the latter has already been settled with the employee.
With the increase in the MMA, the floor of Sodra contributions will also change, when a person earns less than the minimum wage, but is guaranteed the social guarantees of a person who receives the minimum wage. In this case, the employer calculates the state social security contributions for the employees from the salary paid and also pays the difference from the own funds to the minimum social guarantees.
The pension and social security benefits that a person receives depend on the social security contributions paid by employers. After applying the Sodra contribution floor, a person who has worked all year and will accumulate a full year of experience.
