“The Braunschweig prosecution is investigating the disappearance of Madeleine Beth McCann, a 43-year-old German citizen suspected of murder at the time,” federal police said in a statement.
British girl Madeleine, also known as Maddie, disappeared in 2007 at the Praia da Luso complex, Portugal, on May 3, almost just before her fourth birthday, when her parents put her to sleep in a hotel room and had dinner with friends at a party restaurant.
Despite many suspects and theories about what might have happened, no one has yet been convicted of the girl’s disappearance.
An unidentified suspect is currently serving a “long prison term,” according to police, and has previously been convicted of child sexual abuse.
Chief investigator Christian Hoppe told ZDF radio that the investigation gave police reason to suspect that the man was involved in Madeleine’s murder.
The man regularly lived in the Algarve between 1995 and 2007, added the police, who are currently collecting information on the two vehicles used by the suspect, as well as two phone numbers.
Portuguese police completed a 14-month investigation in 2008. At one point, even the girl’s parents became suspects, but the suspicions were later dismissed.
In July 2013, the British police launched their own investigation, but search operations at the Praia da Lusus complex did not yield results.
