Encourage the historical space

In 2013, the Kaunas City Council approved the students’ proposal to name the southern part of Vienybys Square, located between the central building of Kaunas University of Technology and Vytautas Magnus University, as Student Square.

“Generally speaking, after reconstruction, the Student Square will be stylistically similar to the northern part of the Vienybės Square, because both historically and in fact it is a common square separated by K. Donelaičio Street,” explained the author of the project, the architect Rimantas Giedraitis.

According to experts, the academic community loved 5,000. square meters of infrastructure – is worn out and has been asking for changes for some time.

“Now it is as if we had a square divided into two parts, where the view is different like day and night. We will correct this inequality. The goal is to fix everything by 2022, when Kaunas becomes the European Capital of Culture. We hope that the fundamentally renovated Student Square, with its functionality and aesthetic appearance, will not be inferior to the adjacent space beyond K. Donelaičio Street, which has earned international recognition, ”said the Mayor of Kaunas, Visvaldas Matijošaitis.

Will keep the overall style

R. Giedraitis, the head of the Giedraitis & Architects office, and the team led by him will present in detail the prepared project proposals to the public in one week (January 6) and will receive feedback from Kaunas residents. In light of these, a technical project will be launched.

According to the director of the Kaunas municipal administration, Vilius Šiliauskas, after the successful completion of the technical preparation procedures for the project, the contracting of the contract is expected to start in early spring.

The renovated space is planned to have a bright view of green areas with plant lighting, as well as cozy terraces with benches between them. R. Giedraitis emphasizes that the same finishing materials will be used in the plaza as in Unity Square: granite slabs and lightweight concrete, so Student Square will stylistically repeat what Kaunas residents and guests across the street already have liked.

More space for leisure

According to the project, the Student Square will be distinguished by high-quality lighting throughout the territory, as well as several places for sculptures.

“All the trees in the area will be preserved, as well as places for more student gatherings, both on mobile outdoor furniture and long benches,” said the architect.

Meanwhile, the reconstruction of S. Daukanto street, which “rests” in the square, is already halfway there. When the weather warms up, the granite countertop will be placed and the gaps in the flat joints will be filled. All works on S. Daukanto Street are scheduled to be completed by mid-2021.
