It is not yet known when the third shipment will arrive in Lithuania. After all, the supply of the vaccine was cut off due to disruptions at the Belgian plant, where the refrigeration equipment failed.
All doses have been used up
Vaccination at Panevėžys Hospital began, as in all of Lithuania, on December 27 at 8 am. The Panevėžys region completed the vaccination on December 28 at 12 noon. The last to be vaccinated was the Hospital de Utena.
A total of 975 employees were vaccinated in Panevėžys and Utena county hospitals. Priority groups vaccinated working with COVID-19 infection and risk groups with comorbidities.
Shared with others – gave 125 doses
Arvydas Skorupskas, director of Panevėžys Hospital, said that Panevėžys Hospital staff received 850 doses of vaccines.
“Other doses, 125 units, were administered to smaller hospitals in the region. Similar figures are found in other regions of Lithuania, where small amounts of vaccine were obtained. Šiauliai Hospital also received 975 doses of vaccine and vaccinated 875 of its employees, “said A. Skorupskas and calculated:
“From October 1 to December 15, 145 patients with COVID-19 and pneumonia were treated in the hospitals of the Panevėžys region, and around 750 patients were treated in the Republican Hospital of Panevėžys. The differences are huge. In addition, Panevėžys Hospital offers specific services: treatment of myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular accidents and multiple injuries. These services cannot be changed by anyone, they cannot be transferred to other hospitals. That is why we need to vaccinate staff to guarantee services. For this reason, this strategy was chosen for vaccination and the rest of the vaccine was transferred to other hospitals in the region ”.
Without knowledge of the third shipment
A. Skorupskas, director of Panevėžys Hospital, said when other shipments of vaccines would arrive at the medical institution.
“We expected the second batch of vaccine to arrive at Panevėžys Hospital on December 29. The vaccines are already in Lithuania, but due to interruptions at the Belgian plant, the refrigeration equipment has failed, so the vaccine supply is stagnant Therefore, it was decided not to divide the second batch of vaccine until we had a precise knowledge of the third batch. It is necessary to guarantee the vaccination of those who received the first vaccine, “explained A. Skorupskas.
More doses are needed
According to A. Skorupskas, to vaccinate all hospital employees in Panevėžys and Utena counties, some 2,800 doses of vaccine should be available.
“975 people have already been vaccinated and there are still about 1 825 vaccinated. If we receive the required amount of vaccine – two containers, all doctors and employees in Panevėžys and Utena counties will be vaccinated. If we do not receive it, we will reduce the number proportionally. of vaccinated people, ”said the director of the Panevėžys Hospital.
Vaccinated and administration
The director of the medical institution explained that four employees of the Panevėžys Hospital administration had been vaccinated.
“The administration of the Panevėžys Hospital consists of 4 people, who are not only the heads of the administration, but also doctors. They provide services. I am a surgeon myself and provide advice on surgical diseases. Also, I belong to a risk group. I’m vaccinated. Deputy Medical Director Mindaugas Vaitkus is currently the only healthy pulmonologist. He is on duty in the COVID-19 unit and works in resuscitation.
He also received the vaccine. The third administration employee is Nursing Administrator Jolanta Gertienė. She works in the radiology department. The doctor performs ultrasound procedures on COVID-19 infected and COVID-19 uninfected patients. The three of us work as doctors and have contacts with patients with coronavirus, ”explained A. Skorupskas.
Divisions are complex
Meanwhile, Mindaugas Vaitkus, deputy director of Medicine at Panevėžys Republican Hospital, was glad that I didn’t have any side effects to vaccinate me.
“We are waiting, but there were no side effects. By the way, if we had known that the second vaccine shipment would not reach the Panevėžys hospital, the vaccine lists would have been compiled according to a different principle: the vaccine was divided differently for the hospitals in the Panevėžys and Utena region. However, even then, there would have been dissatisfaction with why some received so many vaccinations and others more or less. Until the last minute, it was stated that we would receive as many doses of the vaccine as necessary in time, ”said the doctor.
