Oak tube missed a chance to shine in the March Madness battles of the National Association of College Athletes (NCAA); his university decided not to participate in them this season.
The University of Arizona Wildcats team has been accused of bribing players in recent years. NCAA rules prohibit attracting players financially, but Emanuel Richardson, who worked as an assistant coach on the team, was found guilty of the offense.
The American initially denied such actions, but after records of phone conversations surfaced, he admitted to paying the top DeAndre Ayton about $ 10,000 a month to play in Arizona.
Ayton has been a season in the Wildcats, and on the Rookie Exchange of the National Basketball Association (NBA) 2018, he has been invited by the first call of the Phoenix Suns team, where he still plays.
In 2019, another assistant coach, Mark Phelps, left the University of Arizona for similar reasons, paying money to another talent, Rawle Alkins. The latter spent two seasons with the Wildcats, played for a year with the Chicago Bulls, and then moved to Portugal.
“The University of Arizona is pulling out of the playoffs for a year due to an investigation by the NCAA. This decision is based on the gross misconduct of former team members revealed in the investigation, the undermining of college expectations, and unethical behavior. The penalties provided by the NCAA for such crimes were also taken into account. With this decision, we are demonstrating our commitment, credibility and integration in serving the long-term interests of the university and the men’s basketball program, ”said the official statement.
The University of Arizona is not the first to take this path; Auburn University, which has previously committed such crimes, has applied that punishment.
It is a shame that the team’s players are the ones who suffer the most with this type of sanction. James Akinjo, Jemarla Baker and A. Tubel, who are running as NBA rookies, missed the opportunity to appear on “March Madness,” where they can most likely improve their actions.
Kerras Kriisa should be even more disappointed, who will be able to make his Wildcats debut due to bureaucratic problems, so the former Žalgiris is likely to run out of organized basketball this entire season.
Overall, the Wildcats had to become a team that grew a lot of international talent this season. In addition to Lithuanian brothers Ąžuolas and Tautvilas Tubelis and Estonian K. Kriisa, the team also includes Frenchman Daniel Batcho, Tibetan Turk Gorener, Canadian Bennedict Mathurin, and Cameroonian Christian Koloko.
The Arizona team started the season strong (7/1), so they definitely would have made the playoffs and had a chance to advance quite a bit in them. It is true that the team last participated in the March Madness in 2018 and withdrew in the first round, in 2019 the playoffs were not reached, and this year the season ended without reaching this stage.
Tubelis, 18 years old and 208 cm tall, has already managed to enter the Wildcats with the fifth starter this season and in 19 minutes he has 7.8 points (29 percent from three points), 5.1 rebounds and 0.5 assists.
