Center chief Eugenijus Valikovas says the Lithuanian army ships and helicopter did not detect oil stains or their remains on Tuesday. In this way, according to him, it is believed that the polluting spots have been destroyed by nature itself.
“The search area has been expanded to the maximum drift distance possible, no spots have been detected,” Valikov told BNS on Tuesday.
“It (the stain – BNS) is dispersed into smaller pieces by climatic conditions – wind and waves, and the cold air and water temperatures have coagulated it into lumps and this stain disappears by itself, that is, it drowns ”, Emphasized the head of the center.
On Monday it was announced that the site was about 4 kilometers long and about 100 meters wide. According to the Ministry of the Environment, up to 2 tons of crude oil was spilled into the environment.
“It is not a disaster, it is not an accident, it is a one-time pollution incident. The amount is not large, which does not cause a catastrophic or accidental impact on nature,” said E. Valikovas.
The Ministry of the Environment announced that the preliminary damage to the environment amounts to about 12 thousand. He will have to be paid by the director of the terminal, the company Orlen Lietuva of the Polish company Orlen.
The company said that on Monday evening it had surveyed the Baltic Sea coast from Šventoji to Liepaja and did not notice any contamination.
Arūnas Malinovskis, Head of the Communications Division of the Department of Environmental Protection, told BNS that the damage is being calculated for the time being, it will be determined by the laboratory of the Environmental Protection Agency.
Orlen Lietuva has been importing oil through the Būtingė terminal since 2006, when the Polish company Orlen acquired the then Mažeikių Nafta.
In 1999-2008, four major or minor incidents occurred at the Būtingė terminal, which has been in operation since 1998.
