Lithuanian Railway Group passenger transport company LTG Link purchases 30 electric trains. Some of them will have built-in batteries to allow driving and non-electrified sections.
After announcing the launch of market consultations on the renewal of the train fleet in the summer, LTG Link announces the first stage of public procurement: the requirements for the qualification of suppliers are introduced to the market.
“Following the announcement of the market consultation, major European train manufacturers were interested in our planned purchase. Following this consultation, we refined the idea of purchasing only electric trains, some of which will be equipped with batteries. The batteries would be used by the electric train when running in a non-electrified section or section thereof. These trains are an innovation in the context of European railways, as they guarantee completely “green” travel, – Linas Baužys, CEO of the company, is quoted in the LTG Link report.
According to the data available to the UK, these battery trains can cover a distance of around 100 km on the non-electrified section. And this would allow them to reach cities like Varėna or Mažeikiai.
According to L. Baužis, it is planned to buy about 30 new trains. Some of them would be electric, others, electric with batteries. These latest trains are a novelty in rail transport, which is being implemented in its fleets by Austrian, Danish, Irish and British carriers.
The value of the public procurement for its acquisition amounts to more than 200 million. EUR. All of the company’s electric trains run on electricity from renewable energy sources, which is why it is estimated that the renewal of the train fleet will mean 69% less carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year.
