A month before the new car tax goes into effect: who and how much will I have to pay?

[ad_1]

The tax will be applied to passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, depending on the type of fuel and its combinations, and whose CO2 emissions exceed 130 g / km.

It will be charged when registering the car for the first time. In other words, when you want to register a new or imported car.

Also in cases where the driver of the car changes. For example: a car previously operated in Lithuania is registered in the name of another driver, the right to drive the car is granted to another person based on a long-term lease, etc. The fee also applies to the re-registration of a vehicle after its withdrawal. The most common case is when the temporary registration period expires.

What does it not apply to?

There are some exceptions The tax will not apply to temporarily registered vehicles (up to one month) leaving Lithuania, nor to historical cars for which historical registration plates have been issued. There will also be no charge for registered cars whose drivers do not change. For example: after paying the lease, change the person’s last name, request a duplicate of the registration certificate instead of the lost or damaged certificate, and so on.

It is important to note that in case of re-export, the fee will have to be paid, but will be refundable if after registering a new car, it will be deregistered and removed from the territory of Lithuania within 90 days from the first registry.

How is CO2 determined?

The rate will be calculated at the time of registration of the car. Its size will depend on the CO2 emissions of the car, which will be determined in various ways.

First, the value of the indicator will be used from the origin or approval documents of the car.

If the CO2 content is not specified in these documents, it will be determined based on the CO2 emissions of other registered equivalent cars.

In the event that it is not possible to determine the emissions on the basis of the CO2 emissions of equivalent automobiles, it will be calculated according to the formulas provided by law. This requires the technical data of the vehicle in the origin or approval documents: mass of the motor vehicle in running order (kg), maximum power of the vehicle motor (kW), type of gearbox. It should be noted that, depending on the type of fuel in the car, not all data can be used in the calculation.

And finally, if it is not possible to calculate the CO2 content by entering the technical data of a specific car in accordance with the formulas provided by law, the equivalent vehicle data will be used.

How to pay?

When registering a car previously operated in Lithuania online, its CO2 emissions and taxes will be calculated automatically, therefore the payment will be made in the electronic space. In other cases, it will be possible to do it in Regitra Department.

It is also important to note that the car registration procedure will only be completed once payment has been made. In other words, the car will only be registered in the person’s name after the registration fee has been paid.

Incidentally, it is possible to independently calculate the preliminary amount of the registration fee using a specially designed calculator. You can find more information about the registration fee on the Regitra website.
