Kaunas has chosen a place for universal vaccination of the population: everyone knows about this object

“When planning universal vaccination, we were looking for a place that was not only convenient, but also known to all residents. Today, the old empty building of the Kaunas Central Post Office turned out to be exactly like this. The large space within the building will help ensure procedures that are safe and fast enough to serve as many people as possible during universal vaccination, ”said Paulius Keras, Head of the Kaunas Municipality Emergency Operations Center.

According to him, it is especially important that the vaccination site is easily accessible by public transport. This will help older people to get there without major problems.

The former premises of the Kaunas Central Post Office are currently owned by the Lithuanian Post Office, with which the municipality plans to enter into a lease. Such a decision was approved by the Kaunas City Council on December 22. During the remote meeting, the mayor of Kaunas, Visvaldas Matijošaitis, stated that the goal is to rent the first floor of the post office for a symbolic price, maybe even 1 euro.

“We are interested that the old Kaunas Central Post Office has new owners as soon as possible and the necessary investments for its renovation and implementation can be secured. While we await the decision of the responsible state institutions, whether the new owner of the building be it the state or a private company, we are open to cooperation with various institutions and organizations, thus creating opportunities to make meaningful use of currently unused facilities, ”said Ugnė Bartašiūtė, Head of the Lithuanian Postal Communication Department.

Priority by risk group

The first dose of vaccines, which is scheduled to arrive in Lithuania on December 27, will be administered to the coordinating regional hospital – the staff of the LSMU Kaunas clinics. The shipment of vaccines obtained in the second stage will be used more widely. Patients and staff of nursing and care institutions, physicians, people over 65 years of age and people with chronic diseases will be vaccinated first.

Those who can come alone will be vaccinated at the Central Kaunas Post Office. A team assembled by the Kaunas Polyclinic will work here, ensuring a smooth and safe vaccination process.

It is expected that after the start of the mass vaccination, residents who want to be vaccinated must register in a specially designed system and arrive at the place at the appointed time.

Up to 1,400 people could be vaccinated per day.

The course of vaccination will be the same as for any other vaccine, but there is already a particularly high level of public interest. Up to 1,400 people could be vaccinated per day in the Kaunas Central Post Office building. If necessary, additional suitable premises would be used.

Invite student forces

Vaccination will also be available for those who can no longer physically enter the city center. Patients from nursing and care institutions will be taken and vaccinated by special mobile teams made up of doctors from the Kaunas Polyclinic.

“Currently, we are preparing and planning to carry out the vaccination in Kaunas. As this will be a new experience for everyone, we will learn from it and improve the process. The same happened with the mobile checkpoint. We will see how many medical workers we can distract from their current direct jobs. However, since people also suffer from other diseases, it will be necessary to supplement the staff at the vaccination sites, ”emphasized Paulius Kibiša, Director of the Kaunas City Polyclinic.

According to him, with the approval of the Government, it is planned to use senior medical and nursing students to help. Qualified doctors from the Kaunas region are also invited to register for additional jobs at the Kaunas vaccination centers.
