During a remote meeting with the mayors of the Vilnius region on Monday, G. Nausėda discussed the management of the COVID-19 pandemic in the region and preparations for vaccination.

“The situation in the country also dictates the issue. Most of the time we talk not only about how municipalities are prepared to face the challenges of the coronavirus, but also about how they are prepared to accept the vaccine, distribute it and implement vaccination policies, ”said the president.

G. Nausėda recalled that the vaccine will soon reach Lithuania, so the role of municipalities will be very important here. According to the head of the country, the municipalities are generally prepared to carry out this process without problems. However, according to the president, there is a lack of clarity from the central government on the exact order of vaccination to avoid unnecessary interruptions and misunderstandings.

According to G. Nausėda, four groups will be vaccinated in Lithuania in order. According to the head of state, although this will not be a problem for the first round of vaccines, with more vaccines more groups should be highlighted, which will be the first to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Although some countries have decided to vaccinate people at risk first, in the president’s view, Lithuania’s decision to vaccinate doctors first is correct.

“Doctors are the category of our people who, on the one hand, if the coronavirus itself is damaged, our ability and potential to provide medical care immediately suffer severely. Sometimes entire sections don’t work. We cannot allow this, considering that people not only suffer from coronavirus, but also from other diseases, ”said G. Nausėda.

Another reason, according to the president, is that doctors themselves can become carriers of the virus and infect patients who are not infected by the coronavirus.

“I think this is the right decision in principle and we should follow it,” he said.

Assessed the new government’s fight against the pandemic

In assessing the new government’s decisions regarding the management of the pandemic, the president noted that the work had to be done under difficult conditions. G. Nausėda stated that there was spontaneity in the job transfer process, certain unnecessary tensions that could have been avoided.

“The decisions that have been made are basically correct in management. I believe that, in the current context, we must strengthen our quarantine policy. Unfortunately, the previous quarantine policy has produced only partial results, “the president said.

According to him, nothing can satisfy the fact that Lithuania, according to the number of morbidity and mortality, is 100 thousand. copying the population in the ranks of the leading states.

“It is definitely not an area we would like to lead in,” said G. Nausėda.

According to the head of the country, it is not yet possible to assess whether the restrictions imposed by the government are taking effect, it will be possible to speak of some intermediate result at the end of this week.

“Of course, as long as we spend the Christmas period responsibly,” G. Nausėda is convinced.

The mayors of eight municipalities in the Vilnius region (Elektrėnai, Vilnius city and Vilnius district, Švenčionys, Ukmerg, Širvintos, Šalčininkai, Trakai districts) participated in the remote meeting with the president.

In addition to the coronavirus management and vaccination strategy, issues related to the prevention of corruption, public procurement, access to early education, ethnic communities, the reform of the transfer of state lands to municipalities, were also discussed. the sustainable mobility of the region, the protection of the old town of the capital, the initiatives of green courses in the heat sector.

This meeting will complete the cycle of G. Nausėda’s working days in the ten regions of the country, G. Nausėda discussed the problems of the three regions with the team remotely.
