During a raid on Friday afternoon in Biržai district, agents from the Panevėžys Wildlife Inspectorate of the Department of Environmental Protection stopped a car, in the cabin of which they found a hunting rifle loaded with optical sight and ammunition. The person also had no right to hunt.
This is the second illegal hunt per day detected by Panevėžys environmentalists. Only this time it was carried out with an illegal weapon.
An administrative misconduct protocol has been developed for a person for illegal hunting. Hunting or staying in hunting areas with hunting tools (firearms, traps) or means (flags, night vision devices, mobile towers) by an unauthorized person, or the handling or transport of an illegally hunted animal incurs a fine of 800 to 1800 euros. .
The police have also launched a pre-trial investigation for illegal possession of weapons. This is punishable by imprisonment for 1 to 5 years.
A search of a person’s home found a gas revolver with ammunition in illegal possession, two improvised weapon suppressors, and two reflectors with mounts. Also, remains of venison and skins.
More investigations are underway into the transport and handling of a potentially illegally hunted animal. The environmental damage caused by the illegal hunting of a male roe deer is estimated at 1,700 euros.
