This complex attack, which took place on the eve of the change of government, is one of the largest and most complex carried out in Lithuania in recent years. The study shows that the attack was carried out on purpose and was prepared in advance. However, the biggest concern is that 22 websites were illegally accessed during the attack, most of which belong to municipal administrations. This shows huge gaps in cyber security in the public sector, ”says Minister of National Defense Arvydas Anušauskas.
According to the minister, the NKSC under the Ministry of National Defense prepared and sent recommendations to the municipalities. They are also available on the NKSC website.
The attack took place on December 9 of this year. 5 p. M. A 9 p. M. exploiting a security vulnerability in one of the Lithuanian website developers by establishing connections with website content management systems. There have been illegal accesses to 22 public sector websites, most of which are owned by municipal administrations. The malicious users uploaded three different fake news: “Polish diplomat arrested upon entering Lithuania”, “Modernization of Šiauliai airport infrastructure is FEIKAS”, “Military recruitment and regional divisions of personnel review lists of recruits”.
At the same time, forged emails were distributed. letters imitating the emails of the Ministries of National Defense and Foreign Affairs and the Šiauliai Municipal Administration emails. The letters repeated the liars’ content and provided online links to the compromised websites.
