“The former minister’s decision to appoint Lietuvos Geležinkeliai’s board of directors at the last moment, before the new government takes office, is neither correct nor correct, when I built myself against this fact in one of the country’s strategic companies” says the Minister of Transport, M. Skuodis.

Furthermore, the Minister had doubts about the transparency and professionalism of this selection process. According to M. Skuodis, it is necessary to review the requirements established by the state for independent directors: “We see the need to strengthen the company’s board of directors with people who have international experience in the field of railways.”

A new selection will be announced for the new company board. There will also be an audit of the selection process of the Council of Lietuvos Geležinkeliai with independent experts and suggestions on how to improve the selection of all members of the Council of SOEs in general.

“This company has already undergone a major transformation implementing systemic changes, changing the work culture, and I just want it to move even faster. At present, the company is increasingly entering international markets, must withstand the increasing competitive pressure. My main objective is to have the strongest possible international board that meets the expectations of the state ”, comments the new Minister of Transport and Communications about his decision.

The country’s strategic company, Lietuvos Geležinkeliai, has more than 9,000 employees.

According to BNS, the Lithuanian Railway Board was re-elected on December 4. J. Narkevičius later told BNS that the board needed to be appointed because the current board’s term expires in mid-December. He assured that the process was transparent and therefore did not think that the future Minister of Transport should change the decision.

J. Narkevičius appointed not only five independent members chosen during the public selection for the Lithuanian Railways Board, but also two new state representatives: Virgilijus Poderis, former chairman of the Seimas Energy and Sustainable Development Commission, and Henrik Surovičius , Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

Gediminas Vyšniauskas, member of the board of Klaipėda Water, Valdas Tekorius, chairman of the board of the state-owned company Kelių Supervision and Giraitė Armament Factory, Vygantas Sliesoraitis, director of project development of Skyways Technics, consultant of aviation companies Arijandas Šliupas and Matsas Hansonas were appointed independent members of the council.

The term of the current Lithuanian Railway Board ended on December 14.
