The Klaipėda City Municipality survey on the future of the Giruliai Forest did not receive due attention from Klaipėda residents. In more than two months, just under 15,000 people participated in the survey. Klaipeda residents. At the commission meeting held for a special survey, it was decided not to propose expanding the survey.

October 5 this year. The survey “Do you agree with the extension of the Pauostis railway line in Melnragė – Giruliai forest?”, Which was expanded twice a day, ended yesterday, December 14. The results were announced today at a remote polling commission meeting.

In an electronically conducted survey, which was conducted through the official website of the Klaip oficialda City Municipality from www.klaipeda.lt/apklausa, a total of 14,714 residents of the port city expressed their opinion. The absolute majority – 14,571 survey participants – said they did not support the expansion of the Pauostis railway in the Melnrage – Giruliai forest. Another 23 respondents expressed their opposition to the development of the railway in Giruliai forest in writing, when such an opportunity existed before the start of the quarantine. 143 Klaipėda residents spoke in favor of railway development, and there were also 2 cases where the survey was declared invalid.

In accordance with the Decree of the Mayor of Klaipėda City Municipality, the survey has been conducted since this year. meter. October 5 to October 30 Later, according to a commission created to conduct a special survey on November 6. It was decided to propose an extension of the survey as of November 16. November 30 The online survey section included personal identification and voting instructions to make it easier for residents to express their opinions in the survey. Even later, by decree of the mayor of Klaipėda, the survey period was extended from 2 December. As of December 14, many complaints were received from Klaipeda residents due to unrest when joining the survey through the government electronic gates, which are redirected from the Klaipeda City Municipality website. And indeed, due to the work done on the website managed by the Information Society Development Committee for a few days, it was not possible to join the survey (or difficult to do so). Therefore, it was decided to “compensate” the population for the period during which it was not possible to adhere to the survey.

The commission of inquiry unanimously agreed to present the results of the survey at the next council meeting. The decision of city politicians will be announced soon, at the meeting later this month.

This survey is a way initiated by the politicians of the Klaipėda City Municipality and the City Council to establish the position of Klaipėda residents regarding the railway development in Giruliai Forest. And although under the Local Government Law, the voice of the population is consultative, a clear position of the population could be an incentive to prepare a document that will be presented to the Government as a proposed draft resolution on forest conservation.

This week, Lithuania Railways reported that development at Giruliai is currently not being considered.
