On Monday, the Ignalina District Municipality announced on its Facebook account that the Ignalina District Hospital had become the focal point of COVID-19. “17 employees are ill and most of the patients are ill, some of the medical staff are in self-isolation, some are retiring,” writes the district municipality of Ignalina.

Mayor of the Municipality Justas Rasikas 15 minutes confirmed the bad situation at the hospital.

“The situation is getting worse every day, a large part of the staff is sick and the further away it is, the more difficult it is to provide all services,” he says, adding that the number of patients is roughly double the number of staff.

Some of the medical staff are now in isolation, others are retiring.

“As far as I know, they have elderly people in their families and they have written requests to quit their jobs while protecting their home. <...> The psychological state is apparently similar in all hospitals. I can’t really blame you, but I have to remember that there is also the Hippocratic Oath. “ 15 minutes he says.

The municipality also reported that COVID-19-free nursing rooms and other patients will be discharged at the request of family members and when they have access to home care. If supervision is not possible, assistance will be provided.

The institution screams for volunteers

“The decision was made to ask volunteers for help, especially younger people who are already infected with COVID-19 and, according to experts, have had immunity for at least three months. Volunteers could do support work, such as carrying food ”Says the local government.

The municipality requested help from the Republican Hospital Panevėžys and a response is expected. A meeting of the Ignalina District Emergency Commission is called on Monday.
