Brandon Bernard, a 40-year-old African American, convicted of a role in the murder of two people in 1999, received a lethal injection in a Tere Hote, Indiana prison.
More than 500 thousand. People, including reality TV star Kim Kardashian, have signed petitions calling on Trump to commute Bernard’s sentence to life in prison. As arguments, the age of the convicted person at the time of the crime – 18 years – and his good behavior in prison were presented.
“Just a few months after he turned 18, his brain was still developing,” Cardashian said. “While Brandon was certainly involved in the crime, his role was small compared to what the other teens involved did, two of whom have already returned from prison.”
Bernard and four other black teenagers were convicted of kidnapping white missionaries Todd and Stacie Bagley from Iowa. The kidnappers forced these young missionaries to cash in on them, eventually shooting and burning them in their car.
The crime was committed on a US military base, so the case was heard in federal court.
Christopher Vialva, who was 19 at the time, and Bernard, who set the car on fire, were sentenced to death in 2000.
“Brandon made a terrible mistake when he was 18 years old. But he did not kill anything and he has always felt ashamed and sincerely regretted his actions during the crime that claimed the lives of Todd and Stacie Bagley, ”reads a statement issued after their execution by his attorney, Robert C. Owen.

In July, the Trump administration resumed federal executions after a 17-year hiatus. Bernard is the ninth federal inmate to have been executed since then.
Trump lost the November 3 presidential election, but refuses to acknowledge defeat. His administration plans more federal executions by the end of his term.
So far, 131-year-old presidents have suspended federal executions for a payback period.
