Until the end of next year, the Vilnius authorities plan to build a tunnel under the railway on Iešmininkų street, near the Vilnius ring road, and to start building a tunnel at Žemuosiai Paneriai.
The tunnel project on Iešmininkų Street will cost around 1.04 million. Eur, part of the funds will go to European Union funds. It will be designed for pedestrians and cyclists, thus facilitating person-to-person communication between New Town and Novice.
The municipality expects the winner of the qualifying competition to be known in January of next year. At the end of November, the municipality announced a new tender for the contractor, as the previous one ended in September, when its only participant, Tilsta, requested a higher price than expected.
Last year, the Vilnius City Council decided to build a tunnel 7 meters long and 5.6 meters wide on Iešmininkų Street.
The City Council has also approved another project: installing a similar tunnel 113 meters long in Paneriai, Zuikių street. Construction is planned to begin in 2021, if funds are found.
“Currently, the project is finished and being examined, we plan to receive a construction permit in January of next year. With financing, we could announce the tender in February-March of next year,” the municipality announced.
This tunnel should solve the problems of the locals when they have been forced to cross the railroad in an unauthorized place or travel through sewers for decades.
