“Foreign policy is a very important area for the Presidency. Therefore, this conversation was brief and complete.” The minister would face a number of challenges, firstly, the regional leadership in building a safe neighborhood, ensuring the security, the effective functioning in the European Union, economic diplomacy, the problems related to the Astrava nuclear power plant, as well as the problems of the diplomatic service, “Bubnelis said after the meeting.

According to A. Bubnelis, the head of state expects the newly appointed minister to continue with the foreign policy that was formed on the basis of a broad consensus and is currently being implemented.

Asked about the evaluation of the chancellor candidate, the adviser assured that the prime minister will deliver the evaluations to Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonyte.

“The president wants to express his assessment directly to the prime minister at the meeting tomorrow,” Bubnel said.

Assessments will be made to the Prime Minister.

The meeting of the Head of State with G. Landsbergis completed the cycle of meetings of G. Nausėda with the candidates for the Cabinet of Ministers. On Friday, the new Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė will meet with the President and discuss the formation of the Government.

“A meeting with the Prime Minister is scheduled for tomorrow morning. First, the formation of the Government Cabinet will be discussed with the Prime Minister and the decisions will be announced later,” said the adviser.

Landsberg himself rated the meeting highly.

“We discussed priorities, cooperation and shared vision. I consider this conversation to be a very good one,” G. Landsbergis shared his assessment of the meeting.

No objections were heard

The candidate for chancellor himself assured that his opinion and that of the president on various foreign policy issues do not differ.

“No, I did not notice any divergence of opinion. In other words, I have presented a certain structure from which I have drawn up a part of the government’s foreign policy program, the priorities of which I have indicated and have not listened to the President’s objections. The aim is that Lithuania’s foreign policy has been based on consensus for 30 years, that is, not only a partisan consensus, where the left-right consensus is very important, but also an inter-institutional consensus, ”explained G. Landsbergis.

This nature of foreign policy, he said, must continue as defined by its immediate geopolitical neighbors. “Lithuania’s freedom of maneuver in choosing directions is quite limited. Another thing is that here too Lithuania’s freedom to choose the means by which to achieve its objectives can be deferred and for that the democratic process is necessary during the elections ”, he explained.

President G. Nausėda and Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė will also discuss the ministerial candidates at the meeting on Friday morning.
