“This is completely out of line with logic … This is actually a particularly high risk of infecting those people during a quarantine epidemic,” Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said at the meeting.

Taking into account the situation due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Ministry of Justice proposed extending the vote in the home to four days, to avoid a mass meeting of voters in the electoral district on election day.

Voting at home currently takes two days, Friday and Saturday.

The Cabinet of Ministers approved other amendments to the Semi Elections Law, to increase the number of early voting places, as well as to extend early voting to four days, from Monday to Thursday.

The Prime Minister considered whether increasing the number of early voting locations would ensure the security, order and objectivity of the vote.

“It just came to our attention then. Is this calculated and predicted? If the number of districts needs to be increased, so will the number of commission members,” said the Head of Government.

Currently, early voting is carried out only in the municipalities and lasts two days: Wednesday and Thursday.

Amendments to the Seimas Elections Law are yet to be voted on by Parliament, and it is proposed that the amendments be considered extremely urgent.

According to the preliminary calculations of the Central Electoral Commission, the implementation of these proposals would require around 1.9 million. 3 million euros. Voters will need the necessary personal protective equipment.
