Joseph Szajer, who helped draft the Hungarian constitution, resigned over the weekend for “personal reasons” but admitted on Tuesday that he had received a police warning and ecstasy had been found in him.
Brussels prosecutors told the AFP news agency that 20 men were arrested at a party in the city center on Friday and fined 250 euros each.
In addition to the Hungarian MEP, two other guests enjoyed diplomatic immunity. The local press wrote that it was a “sex party” in an apartment in a neighborhood in the historic center of the city, famous for its gay bars before the quarantine.
The Brussels prosecution did not confirm that it was a sex party and a Brussels police spokeswoman declined to comment. But local media say the men involved in the orgy were naked.
Sajer, 59, did not mention any sex and denied using drugs or knowing the ecstasy pill found by the police, but apologized to the family for violating the restrictions imposed in the fight against the pandemic.
The Brussels Prosecutor’s Office announced that a man whose initials and date of birth matched Mr. Szajer’s information had been arrested following a passerby’s report on the fugitive.
“It just came to our attention then. He may have been injured while on the run, according to the statement. – Drugs were found in his backpack. The man was unable to provide any identity documents. SJ also wrote a protocol for the drug. [kontrolės] breach of the law “.
However, there will be no prosecution unless the European Parliament can be persuaded to waive the MEP’s immunity.
“I was present,” Szajer said in a statement. It was distributed in the European Parliament by the center-right European People’s Party (EPP), to which it belongs.
“When the police asked me to provide an identity document, I said, because I did not have an identity document with me, that I was a member of the European Parliament. The police continued the process and finally officially gave me a verbal warning and took me home.
I am very sorry to have violated the limitations of COVID, I have acted irresponsibly. I am willing to pay the fine, ”said J. Sajer.
He stated: “This false move is only personal, only I am responsible for it. I ask everyone not to extend it to my country or my political community. “
Szajer was elected to the Hungarian Parliament four times between 1990 and 2002, and to the European Parliament four times since 2004.
“Marriage as the basis for national survival”
His party, Fidesz, called him “the most famous and recognized member of the Hungarian European Parliament.”
On Saturday, Sajer announced his resignation effective December 31, but said it “has nothing to do with the current lively political debate at the European level.”
This was a reference to the deadlock between Budapest and Brussels over the controversial Hungarian and Polish veto on the bloc’s long-term budget and coronavirus recovery fund.
Mr. Sajer was also vice president and head of discipline of the Conservative Group of the EPP and, as president of the Fidesz delegation, he was responsible for relations between his party and the group.

In March 2019, the EPP suspended the membership of this Hungarian Conservative Party in the faction following the outbreak of disputes over the increasingly authoritarian government of Orban and the crackdown on the independent press and non-governmental organizations.
After Orban came to power in 2010, Sajer was tasked with drafting a new constitution, which he said he wrote in part on his tablet on a train between Brussels and Strasbourg.
The socially conservative text has caused controversy, including over the definition of marriage as a union between men and women and the “basis of family and national survival.”
