“We have received a letter that the information Mr. Baku received from the speaker later appeared in the media. A special commission of SSD experts claims that the information provided was classified. Upon initiating an investigation, the SSD requests members of the committee certain information that is not made public. This NSGK should consult secret places before sending the letter and reply to the SSD. (…) There is also one of the questions that we will propose to address to the President of Seimas V. Pranckietis, the responsible for the issue of secrets. You will need to assess the relevance of the information provided, particularly as it relates to national security risks. We will ask you to assess whether V. Bakas can continue to work with classified information, “said D. Gaižauskas to Eltai.
According to D. Gaižauskas, for the committee to work safely, it is necessary to carry out an investigation as soon as possible into the leaks of confidential information in the committee.
“Really so that the committee works completely and safely, because we are still working not only with state secrets, but also with NATO partners.” And SSD information as long as data has been leaked from committee members, there is an urgent need for decisions and an investigation. We are also awaiting the decision of the Attorney General’s Office, “he said.
According to D. Gaižauskas, the rapporteur himself submitted a request to the NSGK because, according to him, V. Bakas no longer agreed with him on the data.
“The rapporteur addressed the committee precisely when V. Bakas no longer agreed with him on any factor and arbitrarily released and revealed the rapporteur’s anonymity. In addition, all other circumstances were evaluated. The information that Mr. Bakas had what to provide to the NSGK, they did not provide it and kept the information somewhere for 10 months, where they kept it, we do not know. It turns out that the commission of special experts evaluated this as a revelation of the secrets of the service. Based on them We will try to make a decision, “said the NSGK President.
V. Bakas: the elections are approaching
At the time, Bakas Eltai said he did not know that such an issue was on the NSGC’s agenda.
“I do not see the question that it is going to be addressed somewhere on the agenda. I am not aware of any claims. You should know me specifically, and I do not see that issue on the official agenda, and I do not know the informal agenda of the president,” he told Eltai.
According to V. Bakas, the investigation initiated by the SSD into the illegal disclosure of classified information after he reported receiving data from the journalist is another desire to treat and intimidate certain people. According to Mr Bako, attempts are currently being made to deal with the rapporteur. Therefore, says V. Bakas, on Wednesday he will offer NSGK members who request the SSD to stop acting against the speaker.
“Based on the material I see, I can say that the rapporteur is being questioned. I think tomorrow I will propose to the committee that the NSGC turn to the SSD, asking it to stop the actions that put pressure on the rapporteur. These are the signals that I see. First of all , the rapporteur must be protected. From what has been presented, I see that the director of the SSD, due to his own mistake and possible illegal activities in collecting information on Lithuanian citizens, has commissioned an investigation now, it is not clear here that this be the case. The committee has to react to such a situation, but apparently there are other opinions, “says V. Bakas.
V. Bakas denies that the information disclosed has been classified.
“The information provided by the rapporteur that people were being tracked was for Parliament and was public information. (…) Certainly there has never been such classified information, or at least that related to the rapporteur. This is a lie and an attempt to divert attention from the essentials, that the rapporteur is under pressure and that the information on people collected by the head of the SSD has not been evaluated. That is the problem here. Now, Seimas and NSGC have allowed the SSD collect information on people who have been completely absent. (…) The committee allowed the SSD to interfere in democratic and political processes, in electoral struggles. This is a great challenge for the state here, and the specifications. Services must do something completely different. Normally, this would be considered a crime. An atmosphere of fear and universal vigilance is being created here, “said V. Bakas.
When asked if he was still in contact with the rapporteur, Mr. Bakas did not reveal.
“I would not like to comment on that,” he said.
ELTA recalls that the SSD informed NSGK that in 2020 March 5 The article “The document that caused the scandal regarding the activities of the SSD: we provide the full version” published on the news portal “Delfi” reveals the classified information of the SSD provided in the SSD Detailed list of classified information related to the activities of the Department of State Security. Taking into account that the information published in the article constitutes a professional secret, the SSD on April 8. requested the Office of the Attorney General to provide an assessment of whether the interrogation of the rapporteur in the context of an investigation into the possible illegal disclosure of classified information could be considered as an adverse effect.
The SSD also drew the committee’s attention to the fact that the document in the article not only revealed classified SSD information, but also revealed certain details of the reporter, allowing SSD officials and employees to identify the reporter’s identity. .
The SSD informed NSGK in writing of the initiation of the investigation into the disclosure of classified information.
ELTA recalls that V. Bakas provided information that allegedly, following the instructions of the SSD management, in 2018-2019, intelligence gathered information about the environment of the then presidential candidate Gitanas Nausėda and the diplomat Vygaudas Ušackas.
