“We only offered those monuments that are close to the main roads, demolished, no one has been managing them for several years. There are some in which we are already concerned that they are already collapsing, ”says Audronė Vyšniauskienė, representative of the Department of Cultural Heritage.
People will not be encouraged to manage columbariums as this requires very large sums. The Department of Cultural Heritage only begins the renovation of monuments and cemeteries. And the monuments here are exceptional, some of which, according to the heritage conservationist, we wouldn’t find in any other cemetery in the country. Some still remember the 19th century. In total, the cemetery covers almost four hectares.
The most important goal of this idea is to preserve as many authentic monuments and fences as possible. Only those who want to become caretakers of a specific grave are not so many.
People who offer more than one euro are more likely to apply. It is useful, but as the specialist says, the biggest sponsors are also welcome.
“And they present a project to the municipality. A reform project can be very simple. Especially if nothing new is introduced. Only when the tombstone is in poor condition – it needs to be cleaned, tidied up, and then a photo is taken. And a description of the works to be carried out ”, says A. Vyšniauskienė.
It was then that the municipality would coordinate the popular initiative with the department. Although he is the head of the Cultural Heritage Protection Subdivision of the municipality, people should first contact the department. Whoever wishes will not be able to manage the monuments independently. It will be possible to observe how restorers do it. Don’t even scrape the moss.
“You can do elementary jobs. Remove the moss or choose some kind of grass, a weed that has sprouted. But even the digestion of the moss must be supervised. Because I can take an ax with a blade and scrape the moss from the cemetery, what will remain of that stone then, ”says the representative of the municipality Darius Daunoras.
The municipality says it does not have the money to order the Bernardine cemetery, so it seeks help from individuals. After all, money is needed not only for the Bernardinos, but also for other historic cemeteries, such as the Races.
“It is about the management of the Race Cemetery, where the old cemetery was ordered, and only part of it, and it cost 3 million euros. The investment here is huge. Millions of euros need to be invested. And the patrimony does not only consist of the cemetery, but the expenses of the municipal budget do not consist only of the patrimony ”, said D. Daunoras.
And where is the sun’s cemetery completely collapsed? So far, the city government is funding only the most necessary maintenance of the cemetery. A representative of the company that maintains the cemetery names what he does in the historic cemetery every day.
“Leaves, trash, summer lawn mowing. Delivery of water to the cemetery. Supply. Schools help us mainly. The leaves come to rake the leaves before the fall holidays, ”says Darius Jakutonis, Stebulė project manager.
The company also organizes emergency logging. Heritage conservationists say that in recent years, spinning trees have contributed to the destruction of these cemeteries. It is true that even if someone takes it to finance the management of one or another cemetery, they will only receive the status of cemetery supervisor. But burying here without proof that relatives are resting will not have to.
