President Gitanas Nausėda sought advice from the Council of Judges on the dismissal of Mindaugas Striaukas, a judge of the Vilnius City District Court, after his conduct degraded the judge.

That judge was detained by police last week while intoxicated behind the wheel of a car.

The head of state also suspended the powers of Judge M. Striaukas pending a decision on his removal.

According to the Presidency, the decision to run for the Council of Judges was made after the Chief of the Vilnius County Police Station submitted data that an administrative crime case had been initiated in relation to driving a person under influence of alcohol.

According to the president, the highest ethical standards must be established for the conduct of judges. The reputation of judges must be impeccable, and their moral provisions cannot be questioned.

According to the head of state, all judges should feel responsible for the honor and prestige of their profession, because public confidence in the courts depends on it.

Under the Constitution, the Judicial Council advises the President on the dismissal of judges.

Vilnius district court judge Mindaugas Striaukas was arrested while intoxicated last Tuesday at 7.40 am in Vilnius.

According to Vilnius County Police, the Škoda Superb car was stopped on Dzūkų Street, and M. Striaukas drunk driving was set at 0.61 per thousand.

Ramūnas Matonis, a police department spokesman, told BNS on Wednesday that the judge had not committed an incident, which had just been suspended for inspection.
