Thousands of opposition protesters took to the streets of the Belarusian capital on Sunday, demanding the resignation of presumed President Lukashenko.

According to the human rights group Viasna, police officers detained about 70 protesters.

S. Cichanouskaja, who currently lives in Lithuania, called Sunday’s protests a step forward in the quest for a “free and just Belarus.”

Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia extended sanctions on Friday against officials of the Belarusian regime and blacklisted ministers of information and sports, as well as against officials of the militias. Earlier, the foreign ministers of the 27 countries of the European Union agreed to draft a new package of sanctions against the Belarusian authorities and institutions in order to “support the democratic rights of the country’s population.”

The EU has currently adopted two packages of sanctions against Minsk. The country’s blacklist includes 55 officials, including Alexander Lukashenko. Everyone is prohibited from entering the EU and their assets in the Community, if any, must be frozen.
