After the vote, it was clear that the candidacy of I. Šimonytė was supported by 62 parliamentarians, 10 voted against and 41 abstentions.
I. Šimonytė was nominated for this post by the parties that formed the ruling coalition: the Lithuanian Christian National-Democratic Union (TS-LKD), the Liberal Movement and the Freedom Party.
The decision to approve the candidacy of the Prime Minister is taken by a simple majority of votes in open voting.
However, due to the coronavirus pandemic and the self-isolation of the entire faction of the Liberal Movement in the Seimas and several other parliamentarians, it is not clear whether I. Šimonytė will be approved, the opposition representatives must also vote for it.
Conservatives asked for support
TS-LKD representative Mindaugas Lingė, speaking at the Seimas on behalf of the faction, praised I. Šimonytė’s skills.
“Today we have a ready candidate for prime minister with all the qualities that Lithuania needs. We have a candidate who has no illusions in his own language. (…) She is capable of defending each of her words, she is capable of listening to the other. speaker, ”said conservative M. Lingė.
The politician urged everyone to support the candidacy.
LVŽS Šimonytė will not admit
Aušrinė Norkienė, the eldest of the Lithuanian Green and Peasants Union (LVŽS) faction, declared that the faction would not support I. Šimonytė’s candidacy. The biggest criticisms of the candidate were listed for the ministerial candidates.
We are also concerned with the choice of candidates for prime minister, who should not raise public questions about the ethical morality of scandals that have arisen in the past. “We do not see any disposition to continue the fight against the pandemic, the plans are only statements,” said the politician.
“This candidacy does not have our approval,” said A. Norkienė.
LSDP will not support
Gintautas Paluckas, chairman of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), said that the ruling majority must support their candidate themselves, and the LSDP will not. Because you didn’t hear all the answers to the questions posed.
“The Social Democrats say this government will be the most liberal it has ever been. And there will be a lot of opposition from the left. When we asked the questions, we couldn’t find all the answers,” said G. Paluckas.
The Liberal Movement is currently in self-isolation, so it has not been able to express its position.
A mixed group of Seimas members will vote freely.
Kęstutis Glaveckas, representative of the mixed group of members of Seimas, expressed a common position and mentioned the greatest risks for the candidate.
“The most important thing is the coronavirus. Not just the disease, but the despair and fear that have arisen and spread. The fact that the Prime Minister-designate has taken responsibility for solving this problem is honorable, but risky, ”said K. Glaveckas.
“In the mixed group of Seimas members, we believe that forming a team is a very important issue. Because a prime minister, even a female orchestra, will not regulate everyone, so the team has to help her a lot. The question is whether there will be enough skills and experience “, – politicians named possible problems.
Therefore, the Joint Group of Members of the Seimas will vote freely.
Freedom Party: better prepared and something more
The president of the Freedom Party Aušrinė Armonaitė praised I. Šimonytė’s readiness to work in the Chamber of the Seimas.
“A pandemic is an opportunity to improve public hygiene. (…) Ingrida is prepared for this job, better than anyone in this House, now in Lithuanian politics. She has a team, has different experiences, visions. She is ready to work up your sleeve to overcome these challenges, ”said A. Armonaitė.
“In Lithuania, we will not only see new priorities, but also a new style of operation,” the politician explained.
The Labor Party will abstain
Vigilijus Jukna, the largest of the Labor Party faction, said that Labor would abstain.
“The pandemic unfolds without rest, nobody can predict when it will end, how to get out of this situation. Therefore, ambitious, sometimes even aggressive, decisive solutions are needed to control the situation, “said V. Jukna.
“Respecting the will of the electorate, we respect their choice to form the center-right government in this difficult situation,” he said.
Therefore, the Labor Party will abstain.
“The Labor faction has decided not to obstruct the formation of the team, to work in the opposition and to abstain from voting,” Jukna said.
The Šimonytė language
After the discussion, I. Šimonytė herself joined the Seimas rostrum. Regarding the management of the coronavirus situation, the candidate argued that public participation was necessary.
“There have been a series of statements about the coronavirus situation. I fully agree with what Professor Mindaugas Stankūnas said yesterday that no government, whatever it is, will solve this situation, we will all do it, working together we can achieve some results And people should support us, “said I. Šimonytė.
She said that the interim government right now appears to be trying to intimidate people.
“They act like they want to push, intimidate. Instead of asking, talk to them, so we can get back to the situation that is under control as soon as possible, ”said I. Šimonytė.
When doubts were raised as to whether there would be enough votes for I. Šimonyte, he said that it is never the case that there is no way.
