In Akmenė district, fishermen looking for earthworms found mercury

At approximately 4 pm, the department was informed that in Pakalnišk ens village, fishermen had found several jars of mercury buried in search of earthworms near large quarries.

Officials from the Department of Environmental Protection and the Environmental Protection Agency who were summoned to the scene took samples to analyze the soil.

Officials from the Fire and Rescue Department surrounded the area and all responsible authorities were informed of the finding.

The Akmenė District Municipality Emergency Situations Commission will meet for a meeting on Monday.

Exploration work will begin this week to verify how much mercury is actually buried and how it can be safely collected and delivered to waste managers for disposal.
