According to the representative of the municipal administration of the city Aušrinė Vaščėgaitė, from now on public transport will be less frequent during off-peak hours, but during the heaviest traffic, communication in the city will have to be at an optimal pace.
As the coronavirus situation worsened in the country, the number of public transport passengers dropped significantly across Lithuania. The same situation occurred in Kaunas. Last October, the population traveled by bus and trolleybus about 160,000 times a day, and this year in the same period the number of day trips reaches only 80,000.
“We conducted a survey of passenger flows and noted that during the day and at night, starting at 6 in the afternoon, most buses and trolleybuses run irregularly. Therefore, in the case of a strong drop in passenger flows, it would be simply impractical to leave the same frequency. However, even during this difficult period, those who use public transport on a daily basis need not worry; some trips will even be more frequent during peak hours, “said Martynas Matusevičius, Head of the Department of Transport and Traffic Management of the Municipal Administration of the city of Kaunas.
The decrease in the number of trips was determined both by restrictions on the activities of educational institutions and by the transition of the population to work remotely, from home. Similar reasons prevailed during the first quarantine period in the spring.
“Even if transport trips become less frequent at night, trips to residents who go to companies that work in shifts will be fully guaranteed, as before,” confirmed M. Matusevičius.
