“Currently, four lawsuits have been filed,” said Edvardas Varoneckas, head of the Legal Group of the Vilnius City Municipality.

According to him, the Vilnius municipality asks the court to force a person out of the garage. Failure to do so will remove it from the municipality and recover the funds of the person who did not move from the garage.

As the capital authorities reported this Friday, information has already been received from the pavilions of some 1,400 cases in which the owners delay or refuse to move the garages.

“A civilized settlement with garage owners is definitely a more attractive option than litigation, but at the moment we see no other way to encourage them to comply with the municipality’s order,” said Danuta Narbut, deputy director of the municipal administration.

According to the municipality, garage owners are still being encouraged to withdraw from the courts.

Otherwise, the removal of the garages will be carried out in accordance with the procedure established by law, which will entail an additional cost for the owners of the garages or their users. They will have to pay the costs of deportation, custody, and litigation, ”Narbut said.

This summer, the Vilnius City Council forced metal garage owners to relocate the garages at the end of September. For those who agreed to do so, the municipality organized aid in the management of waste and accumulated area in the garages.

Metal garages in Vilnius and other Lithuanian cities began to develop during the Soviet era. These garages were then allowed to be installed on state land temporarily for three to five years. However, garages that were left in the state for decades eventually became landfills and began to pose a threat to the environment.

Currently, 4647 metal garages have been moved in Vilnius, which represents more than 43 percent. All garages parked on state city land.

Instead of reserved garages, it is planned to create public recreation areas, build new roads for cars, pedestrians and cyclists.
