In the election of the party president, Ieva Budraitė’s candidacy was supported by 93 percent. Congress delegates. The 28-year-old politician is one of the youngest presidents in the history of the Lithuanian parties. In presenting the new vision of the party, I. Budraitė promised to pay close attention to refining the party’s values and ideology.

“We have to dispel the myth through our activities and rhetoric that vegetables only serve to classify waste, trees or animals. It is important to reveal that the green ideology is much broader, speaking above all of social justice, tolerance and solidarity, increased state regulation for the benefit of the environment. Our task is to show how ecology is intertwined with all state problems and what complex solutions it offers, “said I. Budraitė.

The new president also plans to represent the core values of the Greens in principle, take a proactive stance on ecological issues, and actively defend the rule of law and human rights.

“The fact that this government is led by a coalition of three women is more of a successful coincidence. This in itself does not guarantee that stereotypes of the patriarchal system will give way to feminism. Furthermore, it certainly does not guarantee that this will remain a priority. for the current government. <...> I think it is very important to respond to the needs of vulnerable groups in society. The problems of the disabled, migrants, the challenges of an aging society are all sensitive issues that have not yet been resolved by public policies, ”said I. Budraitė.

Remigijus Lapinskas, who has led the party for four years, decided not to present his candidacy in the election of the president and expressed his support for I. Budraitė. According to him, the latest trends in the political arena show that the voters are the ones who trust the young the most and want a new generation of politics, so the leadership of the party must be transferred into the hands of the young.

“I thank the party members for their trust and the work they have done together. I served as president for two terms, which led to elections for municipal councils, the European Parliament and the Seimas, so I decided not to run for another term on the basis of the fundamental principles of democracy and good practices worldwide. Climate change and environmental issues are important to everyone, but especially to young people, so I think that these issues will be better represented by a young person, and Ieva is not only a young woman, but also a competent politician who is faithful to their beliefs and values, ”said former party president Remigijus Lapinskas. .
