Claims of owners or managers of garages in good condition are submitted with the help of information from the elders and the Public Order Division of the Vilnius City Municipality. In parallel, calls are sent to garage owners to get out of the garage out of court, according to a municipal report.
“We have already received information from elders about 1,400 cases in which owners delay or refuse to move garages. (…) Definitely a civilized agreement with garage owners is a more attractive option than litigation, but at the moment we do not see any other way to encourage them to comply with the order of the municipality ”, said Danuta Narbut, deputy director of the municipal administration From the capital.
According to her, owners who have not moved into the garage also face an administrative fine for arbitrary occupation of the land, for using it without a legal basis. This fine ranges between 300 and 1,200 euros.
“We continue to urge metal garage owners to move quickly to move the garages onto their land or hand them over as scrap.” Otherwise, the removal of the garages will be carried out in accordance with the procedure established by law, which will entail an additional cost for the owners of the garages or their users. They will have to pay the costs of forced relocation, storage and litigation, ”said Narbut.
This summer, the Vilnius City Council forced metal garage owners to move garages at the end of September. For those who agreed to do so, the municipality organized aid in the management of waste and accumulated area in the garages.
Metal garages in Vilnius and other Lithuanian cities began to develop during the Soviet era. These garages were then allowed to be installed on state land on a temporary basis for 3-5 years. However, garages that were left in the state for decades eventually became landfills and began to pose a threat to the environment.
Currently, 4647 metal garages have been moved in Vilnius, which represents more than 43 percent. All garages parked on state city land. The fastest moving jobs are organized in the Karoliniškės and Pilaitė elders. The process is also intensive in the elderly of Lazdynai (Bukčių St.) and Rasai.
As planned, the last garages are currently being built in the Liepkalnio-Žirnių street area, near the western ring road.
