“Unfortunately, we have to admit that the selection process itself was not very transparent and inefficient. In the end, it took a really unjustifiably long time, and I do not believe that the proposed candidacy of the esteemed E. Pašilis will satisfy the requirements that are specifically set out for this position in the General Court, ”G. Nausėda told reporters during his visit to the Seimas on Thursday.

After completing his term as Attorney General, E. Pasilis could, in his opinion, occupy “various positions”. But the president said he does not believe that the EU General Court “is the place where Mr Pasilis could best reveal himself.”

G. Nausėda, another candidate for the judges of the General Court of the EU, declared that he would seek the new government.

“We will continue consultations with the new government and look for suitable candidates,” said the head of state.

The Ministry of Justice has previously announced the candidacy of Prosecutor General E. Pašilis to the judges of the General Court of the EU, and the Government has approved it, BNS previously announced. Subsequently, the candidacy was presented to G. Nausėda for consideration.

Justice Minister Elvinas Jankevičius told BNS that the government had approved the candidacy of E. Pašilis by a unanimous meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers in early November, and E. Pašilis also participated in it.

The authorities did not release information on this decision and presentation of the Government.

The law stipulates that a candidate for a court in the European Union is appointed by the government with the approval of the president. The statute of the Seimas stipulates that the candidacy must also be considered by the parliament.

The selection procedure of a candidate is not defined in the law, it is detailed in the selection description approved by the Minister of Justice E. Jankevičius, which stipulates that the selection must be carried out by a working group headed by the Minister of Justice .

E. Pašilis was already the third candidate for the Luxembourg-based General Court of the EU. His term as Attorney General will end in December of this year.

Find a new Attorney General

G.Nausėda stated that he was already looking for the successor of E.Pašilis.

“Consultations and meetings with candidates are currently taking place. “Today I am physically meeting with a candidate, because he was really interested in the candidacy, and we would like to speak more widely and evaluate his suitability in more detail,” said the president.

“I think we will have a solution soon,” he added.

The Attorney General is appointed by the President for five years with the approval of the Seimas.

G. Lastauskienė will again be nominated to the CC judges.

Although the Seimas before did not approve the candidacy of Giedrė Lastauskienė for the judges of the Constitutional Court and did not approve them for these positions, G.Nausėda said that she would still present it again.

“We will nominate Giedrė Lastauskienė – I said that in the spring, I repeat it again. We have not heard arguments of this type that interest us or question the suitability of the candidacy, so we do not see any reason to change anything,” he explained the mandatary.
