“The plan is such, of course, I cannot guarantee that they will all be approved as proposed, that is in the will of the Seimas,” V. Čmilytė-Nielsen told reporters at the Seimas on Monday, but did not give their names.
“The surnames have been confirmed, they will be tomorrow, they really did not wait long and will ring before the session,” said the president of Seimas.
The “peasants” can stay overboard
Candidates for the vacant Seimas Vice President positions are nominated by: Conservatives – for two seats, Freedom Party – one, opposition – one.
The opposition parties appoint Julius Sabatauskas from the Social Democrats and Aušrinė Norkienė from the “peasants”.
On Monday, the president of Seimas confirmed to journalists that he proposed to nominate another candidate for the “peasants”, as A. Norkienė’s candidacy cannot get votes.
The head of parliament did not name who she would like to see as her deputy and said that it was a matter of the faction to choose a candidate, but that Rima Baškienė’s name was unofficially mentioned to the “peasants”.
Ramūnas Karbauskis, the leader of the Peasants, says that in this way the right mentions the rights of the opposition and its voters.
“Probably the first case in the history of Lithuania where a vice president of the Seimas is not proposed for a faction of this size. I am not sure if it will be offered tomorrow,” R. Karbauskis told reporters on Monday.
“I am sure that if it is proposed, it will be voted, it will not be voted,” he added.
R. Karbauskis did not rule out the possibility that if the Seimas does not approve A. Norkienė, the “peasants” will not offer other candidates.
The conservative Jurgis Razma was already elected vice president of the Seimas last Friday, he is the first deputy, and Andrius Mazuronis, representative of the Labor Party, has been elected from the opposition.
A Future Committee is being considered
V. Čmilytė-Nielsen confirmed that it is planned to prepare a package of amendments to the Statute of the Seimas, it would be proposed to establish a new Committee on the Future, to abandon some commissions.
“To establish a new committee, the Statute of the Seimas needs to be amended, a package of amendments to the Statute is being prepared and, apparently, the issue of establishing a Future Committee will be in it,” said the president.
“There are analogous committees in many Western European countries, I think that if such a committee appeared in Lithuania, which would deal with future innovation problems, it would be a great advantage for our parliament and the important issues for the 21st century would be in the agenda of this committee, “he said.
His first deputy, Razma, said that the Future Committee could function in a similar way to the European Affairs Committee, that is, with the participation of parliamentarians who are already members of other committees.
“A committee of the future, which would consider various strategies, issues of the future, could be members of the Seimas who are already members of a committee, as in the case of the European Affairs Commission,” J. Razma told reporters.
Among the commissions that could be abolished, the Seimas Spokesperson mentioned Migration, but said it was still a topic of discussion.
“It is being considered that the commissions of each could not remain, both saving the resources of the Seimas and evaluating their suitability and significance, but we will discuss this in the coalition format. The goal is for the Seimas to function in the most meaningful way possible.” said V. Čmilytė-Nielsen.
The Seimas of the new legislature began its work on Friday. Currently, the leadership of the Seimas, committees and other structures is being formed.
