Defenders: more than 600 people have been detained in Belarus during protests

The Minsk militia confirmed that people had been detained in the Belarusian capital. The militia also confirmed that special measures had been used, but no further details were provided.

According to the Belarusian Journalists Association, 17 journalists were arrested during protests in various cities.

Belarus has been protesting for more than three months against the decision to declare the 26-year-old authoritarian leader Aliaksand Lukashenko the winner of the controversial presidential elections on August 9.

The opposition and the West consider the election rigged.
