It was decided that the project “622522” will be implemented, which won the first place in the competition.

“A copyright license agreement was signed with its authors and the copyright was transferred to them,” Jana Mikulevič, representative of the Ministry of Culture, told BNS.

According to her, all project implementation work should start next year.

The competition for the monument to Antanas Smetonai, organized by the government, was won with a book cover or a postcard with a sculpture representing a portrait of this interwar president.

Its authors – Gediminas Antanas Sakalis, Kazys Venclovas, Indrė Rakauskaitė – chose to emphasize A. Smetona’s activities not as a politician, but as a publicist, language standardizer, editor, book and textbook publisher.

“Therefore, visual aesthetics is chosen not so much as a portrait or a figurative composition, but as a stenciled artistic expression that symbolizes the flap of the book, arising from its signifiers (A. Smetona – BNS) of social activity”, states the Explanatory note of the project.

It is proposed that the sculpture be made of stainless steel. According to the authors, this responds to the symbolic load of the idea: the variability of memory and history, the effect of time and identity with the environment.

“The iron used for the sculpture appeals to the metaphor of the ‘iron will’, which is easily identified with the personality of A. Smetona. This material also refers to sustainability, solidity through the symbolism of the material, whereby the material of the sculptural object itself acquires a specific symbolic charge. Sculptural plastic is a minimalist, ordered and clearly perceptible form ”, explains the project.

According to the authors’ calculations, the monument should cost more than 45 thousand. EUR, and the total implementation of the project – 233 thousand. euros.

The monument is planned to be built in Vilnius near the building marked number 13 on Gediminas avenue, across from Vincas Kudirka square. The Lithuanian State Council worked on the building that was in this place in 1918, which has not survived to this day, its president was A. Smetona, and the first cabinets of the Lithuanian state also functioned, headed by Augustinas Voldemaras and Mykolas Šleževičius. Also published here was the periodical information publication “Provisional Government News” of the main laws and government orders of the independent state of independent Lithuania.

A. Smetona was President of Lithuania in 1919-1920 and 1926-1940. He died in 1944 after a fire at his home in the United States.

Lithuanians acknowledge the merits of A. Smetona in restoring the statehood of Lithuania in the interwar period, the progress of the state at that time, but sometimes his coming to power by coup and the withdrawal of Lithuania from the Soviet occupation are sometimes controversial.

President Gitanas Nausėda has called A. Smetonas a symbol of Lithuanian statehood.
