On Wednesday evening, Gintaras Žagunis border guard officers from the Varėna border team of the SBGS noticed the silhouettes of people coming out of the forest into the meadow at night in the village of Sabaliūnai, Šalčininkai district. This place is near the border with Belarus. The arrests revealed that it was a woman with a child. They had no identity documents. The youngest spoke some English. The detainees presented themselves as Sri Lankan citizens, a 41-year-old mother and a 13-year-old son. The migrants had personal effects, hygiene items and a cell phone.

The cynologist who inspected the area where these individuals and the service dog were being held found nothing more suspicious. It was established that foreigners from Belarus illegally entered Lithuania when crossing the border.

The migrants are temporarily housed in the G. Žagunis firewall, they will be tested for COVID-19. Following this procedure and after receiving the results of the investigation, the issue of accommodation for foreigners will be resolved. An interpreter was expected to arrive on Thursday morning to begin interrogation procedures in Tamil and identify the detainees.

A pre-trial investigation has been launched at the Varėna border team of the SBGS due to the illegal border crossing.
