“I am running for office (the elders of the group),” Landsbergis told reporters on Friday after the group’s first meeting.
Conservatives at the Seimas plan to elect the elder later on Friday, when the new Seimas officially takes office.
According to G. Landsbergis, there are still no other candidates for the elderly: “So far there have been no other indications of this type.”
Asked if the candidacy for leader of the parliamentary group means that he is not running for the Cabinet of Ministers, G. Landsbergis confirmed that “at the same time not”, although there were “reflections” on his leadership of the ministry.
When asked in which area the candidacy was being considered, he replied: “Somehow specifically, it was simply a question of whether I would consider, if there was such a need, (I answered) the same as I would consider if there was a need.”
He said that it was important for the group to have an elder at this time and that he was planning future work “one day at a time.”
“The group must have an elder, only the beginning is important in any case, so that the new members of the group feel good, know what to do to get help from them, just all the negotiation work that the elder needs,” Landsberg said.
“I don’t want to get into speculation either, I’m just looking at one day, the faction needs an elder today and I think the job is important, and I have repeatedly told the media that I see a lot of my homework at the Seimas,” he said.
When asked if this meant that if he was elected an elder, he would not be in the ministry, Landsberg replied, “Not today.” When asked about “next week,” he replied, “Let’s talk about it next week.”
The conservatives of the Seimas have 50 seats. The leader of his list, Ingrida Šimonytė, the center-right coalition made up of the Conservatives and two Liberal parties, is standing for prime ministers.
Is Mr Landsberg being considered as a candidate for Foreign Minister?
Conservative leader Gabriel Landsberg is being considered as a candidate for the post of chancellor, Elta confirmed to informed sources.
The politician admitted that there were deliberations to take a position in the government headed by Ingrida Šimonytė.
“Specifically, the question was whether you would consider whether there was such a need,” he said.
ELTA recalls that the leader of the center-right coalition I. Šimonytė told reporters on Thursday that the names of the candidates for the ministerial portfolios in the government that she will lead should be expected next week. According to the future prime minister, it is not yet clear which parties will receive which specific ministries.
When asked in recent weeks if he should take over the ministry, Landsberg responded abstractly, emphasizing that he would work “where he is most needed.” However, there is a hint of a politician, if someone saw him in government, he would probably not give up.
ELTA recalls that the partners of the New Government Coalition – the Conservatives, the Liberal Movement and the Freedom Party – said on Tuesday of this week that they had tentatively approved ministerial portfolio quotas. It was then declared that it had been decided to appoint V. Čmilytė-Nielsen to the position of President of the Seimas. It was also said that at least two ministerial posts would go to the Liberal Movement and three to the Freedom Party.
The Seimas members elected in October met for their first session on Friday.
