A family of four living in the same home was confused: Not everyone was infected with COVID-19 when they found out they were sick. Infectious scientists have explained why the infection does not necessarily affect all people, even those who are in close contact with each other.
According to Oswald of Kaunas, the first of his twenties felt bad at the end of October: the temperature rose and his bones ached. Because the young man was in contact with friends who were later confirmed with COVID-19, he also decided to take the test.
“After receiving the answer to the test, the son discovered that the result was positive. Soon after, the temperature for me and my teenage son rose to almost 39 degrees and lasted for about a day and a half. We were concerned that we too might have gotten infected, so we decided to investigate as well. Although the wife did not feel any symptoms, she also decided to get tested for COVID-19, “said the interviewee.
After going to the COVID-19 mobile checkpoint on November 3-4, Oswald, his wife, and their 15-year-old son were tested for coronavirus. After receiving the answer three days later, he was significantly surprised: his and his son’s test results were negative, although he had a high fever and cough, while his wife, who was feeling fine, responded positively to the test for COVID-19.
“The test results are suspect. The four of us live in a single apartment, here and we performed the designated 14 days of self-isolation. Although my wife and I avoided contact with my twenty-year-old son, who was cleared for COVID-19, he lived in the same room as his younger brother. We have no choice. If the coronavirus is such a terrible and contagious disease, why aren’t we all infected with it, even though we’re “boiling in the same juice”? The man wondered .
Perhaps only that family – very orderly – is ventilating the rooms, washing their hands and thus not catching that concentration of coronavirus.
Different immune system
Vilija Petrulienė, an infectologist at LSMU Kaunas Hospital, interviewed by journalists on the portal, after hearing the story of the case from the Kaunas family, confirmed that COVID-19 does not necessarily infect all people living in the same environment.
“Not everyone is infected, yes, but what does it depend on, I will probably not answer this question, because science is not yet very familiar with it. We have many cases in families where a person contracts mild COVID-19. Then another family member who lives together becomes infected and the third does not get sick, ”he said.
According to the doctor, a lot depends on the immune system and hygiene of each person: hand washing, room ventilation and other means.
“We have many cases in Lithuania where people are infected with COVID-19, but their immune system struggles and falls ill without any symptoms. It is unknown why this is the case, I repeat. Perhaps only that family – very orderly – ventilates the rooms , he washes his hands and thus does not get that concentration of coronavirus to spread, “said V. Petrulienė.
