General Sir Nick Carter, commander of the UK Armed Forces, told Sky News that he believed that by 2030, a quarter of the national army could be made up of robots.
“I mean, we can have 120,000 soldiers in the military, 30,000 of whom could be robots,” General Carter said.
Although the general stressed that he did not set strict goals, these future robots could serve in future conflicts, reports Engadget.
Such a move by the UK should come as no surprise. Currently, the UK Army is not meeting its objectives due to the number of troops, so there is a shortage of them. Robots could fill this void.
However, no one knows exactly what specific roles the robots will play. Today, there is great resistance to autonomous “robot killers.” Deadly robots that operate freely without human intervention or conscience are of concern.
Still, UK Army robots can likely drive trucks, serve as scouts, or perform other tasks without weapons. Therefore, apocalyptic visions of robot-human-robot clashes are unlikely to be in any country’s plans for the near future.
