Linkevičius on the appointment of politicians to diplomatic posts: there has been a hiatus, but it is so common in all countries

Speaking of his own future, L. Linkevičius said that “various options are being considered.”

“It is difficult to say now that various options are being considered. When these questions are answered, I will be able to inform you as well,” L. Linkevičius said on Thursday on Žinių radijo’s “Pozicija” program, without specifying what future job possibilities he is considering.

According to the minister, the appointment of outgoing officials to diplomatic posts was suspended. The portal lrytas.lt wrote about the deliberations to appoint the Minister of Energy Žygimantas Vaičiūnas as Consul General in Los Angeles, and the Advisor to the Prime Minister Arnoldas Pikžirnis as diplomatic representative in Brussels. This outraged the new ruling conservatives.

“Political appointments have been stopped for obvious reasons: the government is changing. There is no desire to exaggerate the situation, it has been publicly explained, questions have been answered and it is not currently being examined,” said L. Linkevičius.

According to the minister, such decisions must be taken calmly and in a coordinated manner so as not to “arouse passions and emotions.” However, he emphasized that this practice, appointing politicians to diplomatic posts, was not alien to other countries.

“I don’t think it’s basically bad practice. But if the decisions are taken at a certain moment – and now there is a change of government and it is quite sensitive – then those decisions provoke even more passions that should not be necessary at all ”, emphasized the foreign minister.

“Political appointments are applied in the practice of all countries and there is nothing wrong with that. Bad if they prevail or are abused. And that politicians are appointed to diplomatic posts, that is the practice here in all countries without exception So I don’t see anything wrong with that in principle. I’m just saying that there must be the right moment and balance, “emphasized L. Linkevičius, noting that the procedure for appointing diplomatic representatives is not public.
