On Thursday, 61 Seimas members voted in favor of said amendment to the Civil Code, 11 against and 32 abstentions.
This means that the travel agency must return the funds within 90 days after the end of the quarantine, unless the tourist and the agency agree otherwise.
Eugenijus Gentvilas, a member of the Seimas Economic Committee, noted that around 500 people have already petitioned the courts for reimbursement for failed trips.
Simon Gentville, a member of the environmental committee, warned that these people would not be able to get their money back if tour operators went bankrupt.
“Although we will help tourism companies survive a bit,” said Algirdas Butkevičius, a member of the Committee on Budget and Finance.
The Justice Ministry warned that such an amendment would violate European Union regulation for pending travel within two weeks, but initiators of the amendment indicated that some other countries have already set much longer deadlines for refunds without fear of sanctions from Brussels as the only way to save travel companies.
