The historic building on Respublikos Street, where Luminor Bank is currently located, which has been trying to sell for more than two years, has reached its buyer.
Not only this street, but also the celebrity of Panevėžys was acquired by the cable and wire manufacturer Lietkabelis for an unprecedented price. Sigitas Gailiūnas, the CEO of the company, laughs that it will not produce or sell cables in such a historic building.
The bank building was put up for sale in the spring of 2019. For the exclusive cultural heritage object, whose vaults are decorated with atlases created by the sculptor Juozas Zikaras, the then owner of Luminor Bank requested 354 thousand. euros. The building has characteristics of cultural heritage that must be protected, so the potential buyer had to preserve those values.
The bank moves
According to S. Gailiūnas, the development of new activities in the building is scheduled to begin in the middle of next year, but the director of Lietkabelis does not mention how it will be.
„We have plans, but we don’t want to publish them yet. We certainly will not destroy the Atlantic. Just as we will not produce or sell cables in this building, ”joked S. Gailiūnas.
When the building was sold, the ad indicated that Luminor would continue to rent a portion of about 1,000 square meters. m of premises for another period of up to 3 years. Still, the bank is already planning settlements at the new location. In the coming months, Luminor plans to move from Respublikos Street to a new location on J. Urbšio Street.
Adorned with famous atlases
The building on Respublikos Street was built especially for the bank in 1931, and in fact, throughout its existence, there have always been interchangeable benches at this location.
The plots for the bank’s construction were purchased from two Jewish families for LTL 30,000. The construction of the palace, now recognized as protected by the state, cost 245,000 LTL. They need bricks transported from the brick factory of the engineer J. Janavičius from Šiauliai. The palace provided not only the bank’s facilities, but also an apartment for its director.
Once the construction was finished, a contract was signed with the sculptor J. Zikaras for the creation of 12 sculptures and two ornaments. These decorative elements of the building cost 13,500 LTL and the sculptor himself had to hire workers on his own. The building space is still decorated with the famous impressive atlases by J. Zikaras, and the ornament on the building’s facade has been decorated with ornaments.
After construction was completed, the bank building was insured for 300,000 lilitas. 1932 The first Panevėžys telephone machine was built in the bank building. Respublikos g. The building, famous for the works of J. Zikaras, remains one of the most important and beautiful buildings in Panevėžys.
